What the knowledge test covers

The knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) is an oral and practical exam at a state-recognised school of occupational therapy based on the content of the German final examination. Only the specialist areas named in the deficit notice are tested. Typical topics:

Treatment approaches

  • Motor-functional (orthopaedics, hand therapy)
  • Neurophysiological (stroke, Parkinson, MS)
  • Neuropsychological (cognition, perception)
  • Psychosocial (psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry)
  • Work therapy and assistive devices

Fundamentals

  • Assessment and treatment planning according to ICF
  • Documentation and the remedies directive (Heilmittelrichtlinie)
  • Professional law, legal and civic studies
  • Hygiene and prevention

On exam day

  • Case presentation with a patient (practical)
  • Technical discussion with the examination board
  • Usually 60 to 90 minutes
  • Result usually the same day

Preparation that works

  • Professional language first: German B2 with occupational therapy vocabulary, writing assessment forms in German, describing therapy goals in SMART form
  • Preparation courses: Many schools offer 4- to 12-week courses, often AZAV-certified and eligible for an education voucher
  • Observation placement: Those who shadow in a German practice or work as therapist in recognition beforehand know documentation and routines
  • Mock exam: We practise case presentations by video so the exam situation is not new
The knowledge test can usually be repeated once. If it does not work out, the adaptation period remains as an alternative. We plan both routes from the start.

Frequently asked questions

How long does preparation for the knowledge test take?

With German B2 and current work experience, 2 to 4 months are usually enough. Without professional German we plan 6 months. Preparation courses at schools of occupational therapy shorten the time and are often eligible for funding.

Can I work while preparing?

Yes. With a residence permit under § 16d you may work as an occupational therapist in recognition under supervision. That is the best preparation because you get to know documentation and everyday treatment.

Who decides whether I must take a knowledge test?

The state authority in the deficit notice. It names the specialist areas and usually offers both routes: knowledge test or adaptation period. You choose, we advise.
